Hi, I'm using a laptop for work. Previously, I could find a list of drives by going to My Computer. This was on a laptop that was outfitted with XP. Now at work, I'm having difficulty finding the shared drive, and I looked under computer. Any tips on how to access it?
Okay, I think I found the files I needed to access. I'm working on a very new laptop. So I'm not familiar with the screen layout yet and the key commands. I'm switching from XP to Windows 7.
One think you can use is Windows Explorer. I know: this one confuses my wife and others, it's not the Internet, it's just a glorified 'My Computer' icon.
The advantage is you have an outline, or as most readers say it, a tree view on the left and the list on the right. And in Windows 7, if you move your cursor over a drive in the tree view that's disconnected you won't get errors.
You can get there one of two ways:
If you know where your Windows button is push and hold it, and push e.
Otherwise, no sense going hunting for it: in the Start Menu there is a Search box just type explorer and cursor down once your reader speaks the first item. Find Windows Explorer.
Now use the tree view on the left like you would mail folders, except when you find the item you want, hit Enter. You may hear a click sound like when a page loads, tab once and you'll be in the new list / table view containing the items / documents or whatever that are inside it.
If you're really knowledgeable sorry if this sounded dumbed down. I know; it's pretty confusing for tons of people.
When you have a card drive if that is what you are talking about on a Window 7 sometimes they don't show in the list under computer. I get to computer, or my computer if that's mor comfortable by going to my start min. Windows key, then down arrow past the search box and type C until I hear it. Hit inter. Now the drive will not show as I have said unless their is something in it. The search box you can simply type the name of something you are looking for as well. It is possible the person that did the upgrade put your files on the D side, since most people use D for old files they have put back when doing an upgrade.
Just some general info, not an answer. Remember to use the left and right arrows under computer as well as the up and down to locate things. That is a good rule for locating stuff in Windows 7 in general.
